Using the Image Search Tool

This tip will walk you through how to use the image search tool on the Bergman Photographic website. The tool enables you to search through historical images of Oregon and Washinton, file flight coverage that blankets the Portland Metro area, and our archive of imagery dating back to the 1930s.

Searching the archives can be done in three steps.

Step 1:

Choose how you want to locate your site. You can search by entering a street address, latitude/longitude coordinates, a township/range/section, or you can simply find your site on the map and then right-click. By hovering your mouse over the search type names with the dotted underline, a help bubble will pop up showing example input.

Entering a Street Address

The address you enter can be formatted in any way, but we recommend you at least include the state and city or county. Entering a street name or house number is optional.

Entering Latitude/Longitude Coordinates

Coordinates can be entered in several formats:

  • Decimal Degrees - DD.dddd (45.1234)
  • Decimal Minutes - DD MM.mm (45 12.34)
  • Degrees Minutes Seconds - DDMMSS (451245)

Entering a Township/Range/Section:

Township/Range/Section coordinates can be entered in several formats:

  • t1sr2es31 or t1s r2e s31
  • 1s2e31 or 1s 2e s31

Searching by Using the Map

If you don't have coordinates or an address, you can find your site visually on the map. Once you have found your site by moving and zooming the map to an appropriate view, right-click on the center of your site. A pin will be dropped where you right-clicked and a search will be started.

Step 2:

Once the location of your site has been defined, you can set the date range for the search. Only imagery acquired in this date range will be returned in this search.

Step 3:

Lastly, you can set the range of the search. This range value will set how far from the center of your site we will look for images. To find images close to your set, set the range to narrow. To find images up to 4 miles away from your site, set the range to wide.

Finally, it the search button to perform our update the search.

Working With Results

After you have performed the search, the results will display to the left of the map. Each result will include basic information about that image and a link that will display the image on the map. If we have a thumbnail scan of the image, that thumbnail will be displayed on the map, otherwise a footprint of the image will be displayed. Note: the image thumbnail or footprint is an APPROXIMATION the scale of the image may differ slightly in reality. The center of your site is marked with a brown pin and the center of the image result is marked with a blue pin on the map. You can click on the blue pin to show more details about the image result.

At any time you may drag your brown site pin to a new location to refine your site location and re-query our archive. Note that this will clear any thumbnails you might have placed on the map.
