Scanning and Geo-Referencing

Bergman Photographic Services offers high quality photogrammetric roll scanning, using a Leica DSW with scan resolutions from 10 to 100 microns with various compression formats available. Files can be delivered on DVD or portable hard drive. Electronic transfers via our FTP site are available for quick response on smaller jobs.

Once a vertical photograph is obtained, it is sometimes useful to rectify and geo-reference the image. In it’s raw state, a vertical photograph contains no positional information, and the scale of the image can vary due to terrain changes. Geo-referencing ties the image to a standard map base, while rectification digitally “flattens” the image to a uniform scale. Images are geo referenced and rectified utilizing US Digital Ortho Quarter Quads (DOQQ) and digital elevation models (DEM) obtained from the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The most recent DOQQ files utilize imagery from 2000, and the DEM was generated in 1998. Images are visually tied to DOQQs and then rectified to the DEM using the ER Mapper suite of software.

This process enables us to mosaic multiple images with fewer mismatches at the cut lines. It is also useful for clients who wish to incorporate the imagery into existing site plans or other GIS applications. A raw image contains a great deal of information; referenced and rectified images allow this information to be placed in a wider context.

In no way are rectified images produced by Bergman Photographic Services, inc. intended for use in survey planning or as a certified Orthorectified photograph. If you require a certified mapping product, we will be happy to refer you to local photogrammetric engineering firms.
